Wooden pallets and packaging

Implementation of an integrated, sustainable heating and drying concept for pallet production, including full automation of internal logistics, heat generation from residual wood, and expansion of the heating network.

Foresco aims for CO₂-free production and therefore requested a total solution that:

  • Reduces CO₂ emissions
  • Pallet drying optimizes
  • Internal logistics automates
  • Circular use of residual wood
  • Fully covers the heat demand

Results and impact

A project that has achieved demonstrable results with a fully automated system:

  • Self-sufficient heat supply
  • Fully circular use of residual wood
  • Maximum efficiency through process linking
  • Significant reduction in CO₂ emissions
  • Fewer forklift movements and working hours
  • Prepared for further expansion

This project involved a combination with a Kara installation.

PROJECT FEATURES

  • BES Bollmann drying kilns with a combined capacity of 2,400 pallets
  • KARA machining plant for fuel production (capacity: 2 tons/hour)
  • KARA wood combustion installation of 2400 kW, 105°C hot water
  • Fully automatic BES Bollmann roller conveyors with loading/unloading time of 6 min 30 sec
  • Jointly developed operating system by KARA & BES Bollmann
  • Smart heating network for connecting multiple drying kilns and a new hall
  • Application of the KARA prio system for priority-controlled heat distribution
  • Integrated solution for CO₂ reduction, process optimization and energy savings

Technical specifications

Input biomass:

The plant is fueled by wood waste streams, consisting of ground pallets and sawdust from its own production. Thanks to an integrated magnetic separation system, ferrous particles are automatically removed and recycled, ensuring both consistent fuel quality and safe operation of the combustion process.

Combustion and heat generation:

The KARA system’s combustion chamber is automatically supplied via conveyor belts from a moving floor, ensuring a constant and even fuel feed. The system generates 2,400 kW of thermal output in the form of hot water heated to 105 °C, which is used to heat the drying kilns and production halls.

Automation and heating network

The internal logistics are fully automated with roller conveyors, ensuring fast and efficient loading of the drying kilns. The drying kilns are controlled on demand via a central control system. KARA installed the heating network, including all water connections, linking both existing and new halls and ensuring efficient heat distribution through a priority control system.
